An Interesting Thing Happened When I Drew Down The Moon

Last night was the Full Crow Moon. It was warm yesterday, unseasonably so, and I spent some time preparing the altar I have set up in my herb house. It sits in the middle of my sacred space, between the labyrinth and a private meditation area next to the pond. My garden sits beyond the labyrinth. The air hums with bees and the quail chatter in the brush piles nearby.

Full moons are the time for magicks of increase and expansion as well as purification, protection and divination. Anything that develops, creates or increases growth is favored. It’s the time for transformation and given it fell on a Thursday, the expansive properties of Jupiter, Thursday’s planetary ruler, can be invoked. This Full Moon was also in Virgo, offering us energies centering on cleansing, practicality and focus.

Earlier in the day I smudged the area, taking a moment to walk the labyrinth as I did so. It resonates with so much energy, particularly within the pentacle in the middle. It was a lovely beginning. I arranged the altar using white, silver, and dark purple candles. White for purity, silver symbolizing the Goddess, and dark purple for spirituality, energies of abundance, and because it corresponds to Thurdsay. I placed the new crystals on the altar for charging, two incense burners, one for charcoal and one for cone incense. I planned to include some herbs in my ritual that evening, burning some on the charcoal. My athame and a new wand for consecrating were present with pyramids reflecting the quarters, more crystals, and the twin dragon chalice completing the altar.

A little before midnight, I went out and sat next to my altar, allowing myself to center, ground and raise energy. I called the quarters, inviting the Guardians of Elemental Energies to surround and protect my sacred space, raising energy in synchronicity. Invocations of divinity followed, along with the planned ritual work. Then it was time to stand in resonance with the Goddess by drawing down the moon.

I moved outside into my private area next to the pond. I chanted the words to draw down Goddess Moon energies, asking Goddess to see and bless me. With arms raised in supplication, I observed the Moon in all Her Glory. Clouds seem to move around Her, never blocking her light. The golden corona around Her began to shift, appearing more hazy, then outside it appearing initially in the shape of a pentagon. From there it shifted into the shape of a pentagram, then the pentagram became inverted. Then the two seemed to merge together into the shape of a merkaba. After a few moments, the merkaba dissipated completely, leaving only the golden corona, no longer hazy, fully visible and bright.

I was stunned, and oblivious to the tears streaming down my face. I had clearly been in an altered state without fully realizing it. Odd, considering I’m an empath. Typically I know when that’s happening. It was the most profound experience I’ve had in any ritual. So of course I began thinking about what it all meant.

What seems to resonate is the movement from the pentagon to the merkaba as a symbol for manifestation into physical form, with the awareness that this is a continual merging of energies, both physical and nonphysical. The pentagon is the last solid form, so represents the physical realm. The pentagram, both upright and inverted, expresses directional energy flow. The point upward indicates the nonphysical realm, while the inverted pentagram with its point downward indicates manifestation into the physical realm. Merging them both together creates the merkaba, the light vehicle for our soul. It’s the quantum field surrounding each one of us. Any real separation between the physical and nonphysical realms is illusory, because it takes all of it working together to even create what we see as the world around us.

In any event, I still had to close out the ritual, so I had to stop all of that thinking and get back to things. The Elemental Guardians have other things to do I’m sure than to wait for me to remember what I was doing there in the first place. So I thanked them for their presence, guidance and protection, grounded raised energy and returned to the house.

At this point, thinking led to talking and no one got much sleep, but it was a profound experience and I had no choice but to explore, which I typically do in great detail. In May, we’ll celebrate our thirty-sixth wedding anniversary. He’s used to this by now.

Whether or not you’re pagan, witch or anyone else, there’s nothing like looking at the Moon. She has a pull that’s undeniable. I’ve felt that and been drawn to Her as long as I’ve been alive. And maybe, just maybe, the Goddess was trying to tell all of us something. We come from One Source. We remain as One. Perhaps Her message is for us to remember that as we go about our day, seeing each other as the holy extensions of Source that we are in spite of what is actually presenting itself at the moment. It’s like that tribe I read about recently who apparently surround someone who does something wrong, and for two days tell him how wonderful he actually is. They remind him of who he is. Imagine that. Imagine the love and forgiveness that’s expressed. The picture I saw showing this made me cry. It’s what we all need, isn’t it?
