The Wildwood Tarot is a non-traditional Tarot deck. Each card symbolizes not only traditional meanings but also an esoteric, Celtic, or pagan influence as well. The deck’s authors include in their interpretations the position of each Major Arcana card on the Wheel of the Year which gives the reader a sense of timing and energetic effect in the waxing and waning cycles of life. The Wildwood Tarot deck is both primal and beautiful in its expression and I love using it.

As with all the Major Arcana cards in the Wildwood deck, the cards that comprise this reading are renamed to reflect new concepts based on ancient archetypes. The Archer replaces The Chariot, the Green Man replaces The Emperor, and The Pole Star replaces The Star. Together their overall numerology for the reading results in one or new beginnings with the Pole Star appearing to show the path forward. And with that, we’ll look at each card.

The Archer

A female warrior pulls back a flint-tipped arrow, her longbow held firm by her left hand, and her eyes on her target. Her dogs stand resolutely at her side as she waits until the right moment to release her weapon. An expression of intention, the Archer instinctively understands when to take action and when to surrender to patience. Reflecting Elemental Air, her arrows represent intellect, intuition, and wisdom as she expresses timing in her response. It requires centeredness and alignment, as well as balance and intense focus so that her arrow reaches its target.

The Green Man

Reflecting Elemental Fire and the expression of will, the Green Man casts his intention in his cauldron below. He holds a staff in his right hand while he appears to stir the pot, so to speak, with an ornate horn. Bubbles float just above the liquid of creation and promise signaling that life returns again and again to the forest-dwellers. Like the Emperor in traditional decks, the Green Man represents the father principle within, strong and assertive as he stands as an ancient guardian, protecting and defending both his family and the land.

The Pole Star

Lastly, we come to The Pole Star, the 17th card from the Major Arcana that illustrates a traveler on a path through a stand of ancient gnarled trees, his path lighted by the Full Moon in her Maiden phase above. Stars swirl above asking the man to understand the greater resonance of Source Presence and the collective consciousness in which each one plays a necessary part. This is a card of Spirit and and cosmic law. Earth and Air are its elemental influences as the message of Spirit blesses the Earth below. Like the North Node of the Moon, the Pole Star is our guiding light, the path of our destiny, and the signal that a new path unfolds.

Taken together, a new path is forming, one that preserves tradition while moving in trust toward the future. Our destiny is an ever-unfolding path built on harmony and courage to know when to take that new step forward and when to wait for just the right moment to begin. Surrender to Spirit instead of ego and the promise of creation will take us into a new collective experience.

Blessings to all!
