Nonphysical energy on the vertical axis blends with the expression of physical form on the horizontal axis. In the center sits Hagalaz, the rune of transformation, protection, shamanic passage and hedgeriding. Hagalaz is the rune of the witch. Destruction is part of the creative force, and the indifference of Hagalaz illustrates that change is a necessary part of that eternal process.

Reinforcing this notion is Jera, above Hagalaz in the upper quadrant of the vertical axis representing the cyclical nature of life and our unfolding awareness of self. Jera is the rune of transformation and balance, assisting the witch in promoting positive change both within and without.

Below Hagalaz sits Othala, the rune of sacred space, containing all the runes within its structure, represents the balance between order and chaos. Othala strengthens that balance within the witch as the Blessed Conduit, holding the resonance of As Above, So Below.

On the left side of the axis of physical form, Wunjo, the rune of joy and harmony continues balancing the resonance of the witch, increasing empathic awareness of self and others. Wunjo assists the witch in creating bindrunes for strengthening familial and partnership bonds. A powerful wish rune, Wunjo opens the heart of the witch in simple allowing, letting positive intention to flow unabated.

On the opposite side of the axis sits Ehwaz, indicating the swiftly changing world around us, promising movement past obstacles and progress toward mutual ends. A vehicle for astral travel, Ehwaz blends physical form with our nonphysical self, providing impetus for shamanic passage and hedgeriding.

Whether in divination or spellcasting, witches embrace the notion of destruction as part of the creative force. Sometimes you need to tear something down to build anew. Remaining in alignment, the witch balances order with chaos with Othala’s influence. She brings peace and harmony to her craft with the influence of Wunjo, feeling the presence of her nonphysical Higher Self as she uses the energy of Ehwaz to gain the wisdom and knowing needed for her work. The energy of Jera provides the awareness of the cyclical nature of things, ensuring that the witch knows when to act and when to wait for situations to rebalance themselves. Sometimes the best action is to take no action at all. It will always be a new day.

I love when I pull Hagalaz as the significator of a spread. As a witch, it’s nice to be reminded of the influences affecting my focus and intention. The runes tell the story of who we are and what our focus should be while in physical form. It’s about keeping a balance. It’s about living with positive intention. And it’s about understanding our oneness in Source with each other. It’s said that all things come full circle. Jera would suggest that’s true. Maybe we should try a little more patience with that process. React less, trust more. What a transformation that would be!

Consider that a Crone tip..
