Eihwaz Tarot

I like blending things. Today I infused plantain, chamomile, lavender, calendula and thyme into some witch hazel. It will make a nice skin spray when it’s finished. Usually I put the infusions in a dark place such as a cupboard. This time, I buried all of them outside in a bucket of sand. Different method, but I’m eager to try it. After I was done, I cast some runes and came up with the spread in the picture above.  Beginning with Sowilo, the rune of the will, on the horizontal axis, followed by runes dealing with energy exchange in some fashion, it illustrates how energy flows in balance within the nonphysical and physical aspects of self.

And since I like to see how one thing relates to another, I decided to do a spread with the Thoth deck and wondered how I could show the same sort of energy relationship in the runespread. So, I laid out the cards in the shape of Eihwaz, the rune in the center of the runecast to see how the energy flows. Eihwaz is the rune of paradox, the link between worlds, the connection between opposites. It moves energy up and down, from one state or situation to another, and also represents spiritual ascent.

Beginning at the top, the Magus expresses our creative force in action, our conscious focus into form, manifested through our will. Moving downward, the Prince of Swords, an Air element card, continues that flow with courage, integrity and a pure heart. It’s our moral compass, our Higher Self, reinforcing our alignment with Source Energy begun with the Magus. At the bottom sits The Lovers. A second card from the Major Arcana, The Lovers represents duality and balanced energy exchange, both within and without. Balance with others is supported by the integration of the polarity within.

The creative force then, unhindered in its flow, is supported by both the Queen of Swords and the Two of Disks. Perceptive and creative, the Queen of Swords is both the witch and the empath. She supports the Magus by further guiding and nurturing the creative focus with individualism and grace. Having said that, she expresses a certain level of indifference, as evidenced by her blase’ attitude as she holds her sword in one hand and a severed head in the other. The Queen as witch doesn’t suffer fools well.

The Two of Disks tells The Lovers to trust the connection with Source, that simplicity is sometimes the answer, and that an inner balance is required for happiness. We forget that fact sometimes here in physical form, trusting our connection with Source. It’s odd really, to even suggest that there could be a severing of that connection. We’re no more separate from our nonphysical self than we are from our big toe. Unless of course you somehow don’t have a big toe, so in that case you’ll just have to pretend. Either way, we’re here to be creative in some manner, not to become caught up in the past, but to live fully in the present. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. Remaining conscious of your alignment with Source changes your perspective. I promise you it does. To try every moment of every day to express yourself as the extension of Source Energy that you indeed truly are brings a lightness to the day. I mean, how could it not?

To sum up then, as the Magus, you bring your full creative potential to bear. Your heart is pure as the Prince of Swords brings integrity to the process of pure intention, the inner balance of the The Lovers bringing the flow into complete alignment. The Two of Disks reinforces The Lovers connection and alignment with Source while the Queen of Swords not only nurtures the exchange but also provides the impetus to stay on the path, lest we lose our heads as it were.

Our life is about flow. Embracing the world with as little resistance as possible supports creative action. And all creativity exists in the now, in the present moment. Resistance typically involves something from the past, and nothing creative results from what no longer exists. Block or resist the natural flow, and things don’t turn out so well. Working for the greater good of all endeavors supports the natural flow of our experience here. We already know what resistance looks like..arguments, conflict, war..and we’ve had enough of that. Effortless creation is ours. It’s our birthright. It’s our reality.

Resist no more, and let love flow.
