Rune Divination ~ Hagalaz (ᚺ), Nauthiz (ᚾ), and Perthro (ᛈ)
It’s said that the Norns control the fate of men, but what does that really mean? On the surface it suggests that men are controlled by three female witches or sorceresses, but we need to go deeper to find the true meaning. It’s true that the Norns of Fate gave the runes to Odin as he hung upside down from the World Tree, sacrificing an eye in the process, to achieve enlightenment. However, it’s the runes themselves that provided that enlightenment which suggests that it’s not the Norns themselves that control the fate of men (and women) but the higher awareness gained from their message.
Today’s divination involves two Norn runes: Hagalaz and Nauthiz, with Hagalaz the rune of the past and Nauthiz the rune of the future. Perthro, the rune of fate or chance, gives us a choice as to who controls our fate or outcome. In other words, are we going to allow Spirit to take control of fate by the choices we make or are we going to give that away to the the ego’s reactiveness?
Hagalaz suggests that transformation of perception is required so that we allow Spirit to inform our soul’s experiences in physical reality. It requires letting go of the ego’s hold on our reactions so that we take a more observational role in understanding the overall situation.
From there, Nauthiz provides the concentrated will to manifest our experiences from the higher vibratory resonance of Spirit awareness. Together with Hagalaz, Nauthiz helps us overcome the self-imposed restriction of the ego as we begin to understand its damaging effect on our interactions with others.
So, when Perthro asks us to consider who controls our fate, the answer is clear. We control nothing if we rely on the ego’s reactiveness because typically, we blame everyone but ourselves for what befalls us. However, if Spirit awareness informs our choices, we learn from each experience and take responsibility for the outcome.

Energetic Influences
Polarity: The feminine (receptive) side of self is having the greatest influence suggesting compassion, empathy, and understanding are having the strongest impact today.
Elemental Influence: Earth (material concerns, physical presence) provides the strongest elemental influence today with Water (emotions, compassion, empathy)next in strength. Air (intellect, reason, justice, interaction) follows with Fire (will, creativity, motivation) having the least influence.
Ray Influences: The effect of the seven cosmic Rays essentially impacts the soul/ego balance at any given moment. As the Rays move through the universe and ultimately reach each individual, they color (or influence) our perceptions and behavior. If we perceive our experiences from a soul perspective, then our overall perspective resonates from a higher vibration; whereas, if we react from the standpoint of ego, our resonance becomes lower and more reactive.
The increased influence of the 1st Ray on the expression of will and power continues today suggesting that motivation and expressions of will are strong. In addition, the current strength of the 2nd Ray influence of love and wisdom indicates that empathy and understanding are minimal, and in conjunction with today’s decreased impact of the 4th Ray energy of harmony through conflict, it suggests that you may be less inclined to collaborate with others or be sensitive to their needs.
The increased strength of the 3rd Ray of active intelligence indicates that the ability to process information intellectually is strong today, but in conjunction with the decreasing influence of the 5th Ray on scientific knowledge, science-based truth may have less of an impact. However, with the 6th Ray of devotion and idealism having a significantly lesser influence, the current fixation on ideology may be less today.
Finally, the 7th Ray’s impact on balancing higher self with ego suggests that ego awareness may have a greater impact on your overall perspective today with ideology influencing your reactions and perceptions.
