You’re Seriously Passing Now??
Fair warning: a rant may be forthcoming. Hardly a day goes by where some insane person decides passing a car on the road right next to where we’re walking is a stellar idea. We give cars a wide berth where we walk because there are no sidewalks and oftentimes no bike lanes either. In some places along the road, you’re either on the road, or in the ditch. So we try to be seen and let them know we see them.
It’s bad enough when a car is passing using the lane on the other side of the road from where we’re walking, but when it’s right next to us, then they’re coming from behind and we don’t always realize it until they’re along side us. That happened this morning and it scared the hell out of me. My husband could have been killed as the car flew by, only inches away from him.
Because here’s the rub. It used to be that we slow down for pedestrians. Not anymore. Now, they speed up as fast as they can while swerving right next to us. Is passing cars a game for them? Do they believe if they drive fast enough no one will take down their license plate number? Do they not understand everyone has video on their phones? Or are they so wrapped up in their own stuff that they don’t even see us at all?
And have you ever noticed that in all that haste and recklessness, we all end up waiting at the same light together? The next time you feel like passing, make sure the way is truly clear. Maybe walkers should wear body cams, or a helmet cam. Surely if a guy can wear one of those beer hats, a hat cam isn’t far off. Or maybe the answer is a drone. My life will be complete once I have a drone..and a Tesla battery. I really want one of those too.

Lots of cyclists wear helmet cams for this very reason. Too many drivers go out of their way to run cyclists off the road deliberately, wouldn’t surprise me if they did it to pedestrians too. They don’t feel anyone has a right to be on the road except large metal boxes. Be careful! Do you have reflective clothing you can wear? Any bike shop can hook you up with all kinds of safety gear (lights, reflective clothes, etc.). I also see runners with lights on their heads. With days getting so short and dark now, might be something to consider.
It’s like they do it for sport..I wear a lot of neon out there so we’re pretty visible and Jerry waves at everyone mainly to get their attention. But it’s dicey sometimes..
