A Personal Assistant? Perish The Thought

Assistant at Work

A personal assistant would require delegating.  I don’t delegate well. Sometimes I organize as I go and not many people understand my system. Take my husband for example. When he tries to help me load the conveyor belt at the grocery store, he’s either in sync with me or he’s not. And he’s learned to back off if I’m on a roll. I like my grocery bags packed just so. And Goddess help anyone who puts fresh fruits and vegetables with something frozen. No, they don’t need to stay cold on the trip home. Trust me, I would have already prepared for that. And I’d like my bean sprouts to not be soaking in ice crystals when I get home. I actually had one checker tell me they were trained to pack groceries that way. This is why I prefer to load my stuff on the conveyor belt. That way the cheese doesn’t end up sitting on top of the hot chicken.

It’s not that I couldn’t explain my process to a personal assistant, I’m just not sure I’d want to. Besides, the job would probably be seasonal in nature, so anyone good would be taken already. I’d only need help during the growing season, but it would be great to have help with watering and irrigation. Except that I have a husband for that. He’s even been known to gather red clover or dig dandelion roots for me. Some women would be happy with flowers, I prefer a nice dandelion root. And feathers. Flowers are nice, but something I can make into tea or medicine is even better!labyrinth

A personal assistant would need to get me. You know, the way my husband gets me. When I wanted standing stones placed around the property, he jumped at the chance. And the next thing I knew, I was planting flowers around the standing stones. He found four more when I wanted to place some around the labyrinth, standing as Elemental Guardians around the sacred circle. He pulls weeds that have grown just prior to the Full Moon, so that walking the labyrinth toward the center pentagram is done with ease. I suppose a personal assistant could do all of that, but not in the same way.

In truth, a witch needs her dragon, her consort, not a personal assistant. She needs someone who knows her inside and out. Someone who will travel along side her on her strange journey through life. Someone who gets her. Someone who stays up late, waiting for her to return from drawing down the moon. The one who cuts an endless supply of rune stock from limbs he’s pruned, lest she run out before the latest runes are completed. The guy who carries boxes and boxes of ritual items used at the altar because simplicity flies out the window when the moon is full. I could use the garden cart, but it’s better when he helps. He tends to save me from myself, and as much as I really love my garden cart, it can’t replace my husband.

So why would I need an assistant, when I have a partner?
