In This Crone’s Opinion, Binding Spells Aren’t Curses

In this Crone’s opinion, it’s no one’s business how a witch chooses to express her* craft. It’s like when I read in the Daily Beast that Bill Maher apparently went off on his last show in December, or whenever it was, chiding liberals for using the NotMyPresident hashtag and expressing their concerns over the so-called new guy’s election win. Evidently, he saw it in the same light as the tea party while President Obama was in office. I viewed his comments as false-equivalence but now he seems to have doubled down on his disgust for the so-called new guy although I also read that people were upset that he seemed to give that Milo cretin a pass.

But in the end, Mr. Maher has every right to express himself any way he chooses even if it doesn’t sit well with people like me. Perhaps he regrets his initial comments in light of new revelations and the unhinged antics of the so-called new guy, or perhaps not. I really don’t know because I stopped watching news programs and comedy shows the night of the election. I’ve only recently returned to Saturday Night Live, primarily because of Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon. Nothing against the rest of them but those two make me laugh. And that’s something I need now. Rachel is also reportedly doing great work and I may return to her news program before the rest.

But I have to say, after watching last night’s SNL this morning, I don’t think I’m ready for an entire news program. I’m still fine with posting headlines without actually reading much of it. There was a scene where various clips of news programs were patched together and I nearly had a panic attack. So no news yet. Besides, if I never hear the so-called new guy’s voice again it will be too soon.

So back to the whole point of this. Judgment. Could we try to save it for the so-called new guy and his connections with Russia? The most recent freakout article I read about last month’s binding spell that some witches performed referred to the magician who invited others to participate as a black magic guy and called it a curse and then warned all unsuspecting witches to avoid this guy like the plague. It wasn’t. I’ve read the whole thing and although it’s a little wordy, there’s nothing objectionable in it. Yes, demons were mentioned:

Hear me, oh spirits
Of Water, Earth, Fire, and Air
Heavenly hosts
Demons of the infernal realms
And spirits of the ancestors¹

I highlighted it in bold so no one would miss it. It’s the only place in the chant where demons are mentioned. Personally, I would leave that one out but then I believe the devil et. al. are Christian constructs and are more likely than not non-terrestrial visitors that were here in ancient times so they have no place in any magickal workings I perform. And I take issue with the notion of unsuspecting witches. Dig that hole a little deeper, won’t you?

Look. Whether we pray to whatever god we believe in or we cast an intention of protection, which is what a binding spell really is, we’re asking the collective consciousness for some assistance in bringing clarity and balance to a particular situation. Or perhaps we’re asking to bind us in the direction of healing and awakening. Binding spells disrupt the individual’s behavior just long enough to give that person a pause. Maybe that’s all the new guy needs to make a different choice. Binding spells can also be cast on oneself, to bind negative thinking for example. Regardless of the intended purpose, the desired outcome of a binding spell is one of awakening to a better truth.

Yes. Collective spells are powerful in the same way as a bunch of monks meditating can be in effecting change and it assumes that everyone involved has the same positive mindset. But given the nonsense of the so-called new guy, why wouldn’t witches, magicians and others of a magickal mindset want to protect everyone? Isn’t that what we’re about in the long run? Protection of others?

Instead of judging those who at least try to respond to this clear and present danger, how about finding out first who we are and why we might want to protect everyone in the first place instead of freaking people out calling it something it wasn’t? This was about justice, not oppression. And no one wants to watch as he drives us off a proverbial cliff.

I’m not sure why anyone connected to the magickal arts would want to impose their judgment on anyone. It makes no sense whatsoever to do that, particularly when the stakes are so high. Each one of us has the right to express our magick in any manner we choose. I don’t perform curses, but if that’s the choice of another witch, then so mote it be. Never my place to judge.

I understand that spells can go awry and cause unintended consequences. But desperate times call for desperate measures. And if anyone believes that this was the only magickal working regarding this nutjob, then they’re quite mistaken.

Mine are in Latin.

Blessings
