Tomorrow is not only a new year but it’s also time again for a look at the monthly Tarot reading using my Morgan Greer Tarot deck. The overall numerology for the month is one or new beginnings, apropos for a new year. But before looking at each week, let’s take a look at how the cards break down.

  • Week One ~ Wheel of Fortune (10), The Fool (0), 8 of Rods/Wands (Fire); 9 numerology; Elemental Fire influencing
  • Week Two ~ Knight of Pentacles (Earth), 4 of Swords (Air), 3 of Pentacles (Earth); 7 numerology; Elemental Earth dominating over Air
  • Week Three ~ The Empress (3), Page of Rods/Wands (Fire), 10 of Swords (Air), 4 numerology (or 13 if seeking a witchy influence); Elemental Fire and Air are influencing with Water/Earth from The Empress
  • Week Four ~ 10 of Cups (Water), 7 of Cups (Water), The Hermit (9); 8 numerology; Elemental Water dominates.

Week one begins with the Wheel of Fortune, The Fool, and the 8 of Rods (Wands). Two influences from the Major Arcana are present with the Wheel and the Fool suggesting Higher Self influences are dominating this first week of January. Synchronicity, completion, movement, and success are the Wheel’s traditional influences along with the cycles and flow of experience all supported by this week’s numerology of nine. The Fool brings a sense of undeveloped potential to the week and with the 8 of Rods, we see that anything is possible as 8 staffs move swiftly through the air suggesting swift action and sudden advancement.

Earth energies and concerns over practical matters dominate week two as the Knight of Pentacles looks to the future, followed by some respite for his mind, and then by his future as a craftsman as he develops his craft. Our Knight is responsible and trustworthy and is focused on creating his own legacy. He is practical and realistic and takes the time to prepare, evidenced in the 4 of Swords, as he takes time for respite, a transition between battle and his future endeavors. Finally, we see him working diligently as he develops his trade. Week two seems to be about a progression or transition from one focus or endeavor to another. If this resonates, take a time out to reflect on the past and what the future holds. Seven as the numerology for the week reflects the balance between dark and light, or in other words, transitions, making this week favorable for a transition into new experiences.

Week three presents with The Empress, the Page of Rods (Wands), and the 10 of Swords influencing. Our Empress reflects motherhood, fertility, happiness, and love. She holds a shield in one hand, a lily in the other while a heart appears between her breasts, her left foot resting on a crescent moon. Next, our Page of Rods looks to the future as he grasps his staff in both hands, a firm grip on his future plans. He’s a seeker, or student, with news to share, living life not only in joy, but also in the present moment. In the last position, we end with the 10 of Swords where we see ten swords piercing the back of a man, dead on the ground. Slander, jealousy, and the end of illusion are interpretations of this card of Elemental Air. It would appear that our future depends on letting go of what no longer serves, instead embracing love and happiness over deception and betrayal. If using the numerology of four for this week, we can see that, particularly with The Empress, securing our foundation or structure resonates as well.

Week four includes influences from the 10 of Cups, the 7 of Cups, and The Hermit. With eight as the week’s numerology, we’ll be looking at influences of practical matters and leadership. The 10 of Cups signifies balanced energy exchange along with happiness and fulfillment. Joy, contentment, and embracing one another provide the foundation for happiness mentioned in week three. Endless options are available with the 7 of Cups, although many see this as having unrealistic expectations. I’ve never interpreted this card this way unless other cards strongly suggest that’s what’s going on. In this three-card spread, that’s clearly not the case. The Hermit ends the week’s influences by bringing wisdom, alignment, and retreat to our awareness suggesting that we listen to our inner voice, allowing Higher Self awareness to guide our mind, body, and Spirit.

A new year and a new month, always an opportunity for something new and wonderful to occur. We began the month with the Wheel and its never ending cycles and finish with the wisdom of the Hermit. Each week, the cards inform and challenge us to reach for new experiences, leaving behind that which no longer serves.

Last year was volatile, all of it on display in that Master year of illumination. Now, as we move into a new year full of catalytic energy, how will we process all that we’ve learned and continue to learn over the coming year? For illumination to matter, it must give way to change for the better.

Are we ready?

Blessings to all!
