We put up a gazebo, which we now call the “spirit house”, in an area where we used to plant a garden each year. Then the rock chucks moved in and that was the end of gardening. Adjacent to the spirit house (gazebo), I put in another altar. Made from some kind of slate and a really large lombardy poplar stump from a poplar seedling I grew many years ago, it’s the nicest altar I have. I have another like it with a large flat volcanic rock as a top, but it’s not as level. It sits out in sacred space next to the pond.

The goal was to have all of this completed for our thirty sixth wedding anniversary tomorrow. That we finished two days early in time for full moon ritual was awesome! Full moons are great. I use them entirely for me. No spells for or because of others, just centering and remembering, blessing and alignment. I view esbats as a time for renewal. True that spells have more intensity during specific moon phases, and many witches like to perform them at that time, I just prefer to use esbats for my own purposes.

Divination is a tool I like to use during esbat rituals. I prefer runes, but also love Tarot. At the full moon, however, I use rune divination to see where I am at that time. Away from the stresses and distractions of the day, it’s nice to have a focus going forward, at least until the next full moon.

Kenaz, Thurisaz and Dagaz make up the influences of the runecasting. Two Fire Element runes and one Water Element rune are represented. Catalytic, dynamic, yet flowing.

Kenaz, or Torch, transforming creative energies, brings physical and spiritual enlightenment. It is the rune of openings and strengthens any runescript. Its influence is in the area of healing, well-being, passion, love and stability. The light of Kenaz reveals secrets and sparks intuition.

Thor’s Hammer is represented by Thurisaz. A rune of new beginnings and breakthroughs, Thurisaz catalyzes regeneration and provides dynamic protection. Thursaz neutralizes opposition and along with Kenaz, stimulates action.

Dagaz, with its Water influence, signals the end of one phase and the beginning of something new. Its midpoint suggests stillness and alignment. It illustrates the flow of energy as it reaches saturation, giving way to its opposite. It is cosmic consciousness and awakening, complete enlightenment. It is the rune of the present moment, the in between, the balance point between forces. Like the witch.

In fact, these three runes, along with, in my opinion, Gebo, Hagalaz, Nauthiz, Isa, Eihwaz, Algiz, and Laguz, all involve energetic influences the witch finds useful in spellcasting and divination. One can see the energy flow as it opens with Kenaz, further catalyzed with a little help from Thor in Thurisaz. Energies combine and express themselves, dynamic and flowing. In Dagaz, one sees the energy exchange in process, balanced in its perfection.

There’s nothing like a full moon. Nothing. Except maybe a new moon. And I guess I have a whole bunch of energy flowing all over the place. Below is a picture of last night’s altar. I may be biased, but I think it turned out pretty well.
