Exploring Tarot: The Page of Cups

A young woman, adorned by a feathery blue hat and a red billowy cape sits at a table with a meditative look on her face. Although her hands are unseen, it appears she’s holding two red tulips next to her body. A blue fish appears to jump up out of a golden chalice in an effort to get the woman’s attention. However, the woman depicted in the Page of Cups from the Morgan-Greer Tarot is lost in thought or perhaps a daydream and doesn’t appear to see the fish at all.

The Morgan-Greer Tarot deck has a more colorful take on the traditional Rider-Waite deck and, in my opinion, it evokes emotion in a manner that the Rider-Waite does not. The colors used are both intense and beautiful, and I really like performing readings with the deck.

Pages represent students, seekers, or news bearers. They appear in all four suits of the Minor Arcana and are the youngest members of the Court, followed by the Knight, Queen, and King in that order. Cups is governed by Elemental Water so we can assume the Page of Cups is passionate and loving, emotional, empathic, and imaginative. And it’s the empathic and imaginative aspects of this Page that reinforce the woman’s meditative state.

The Page of Cups is spiritual and psychic, and from a Hermetic perspective, each Page from the four suits reflects Elemental Earth. And the case of Cups, the Earth Aspect of Elemental Water. Therefore, this Page is kind, romantic, generous, and reflective.

When the Page of Cups appears in a reading, it’s signaling the need for reflection, contemplation, and/or empathy.
